KIWANIS CLUB DONATES LAND TO YMCA

The Kiwanis Club of Kitchener-Waterloo gave a 77-acre parcel of land at Paradise Lake to the YMCA (August 25, 2009).  The ceremony was attended by many Kiwanians from the area and many YMCA associates, including Mike Stork, KW YMCA President and John Haddock, CEO of YMCAs of Cambridge & Kitchener-Waterloo.

The land is currently occupied by the YMCA Outdoor Education Centre, and Camp Ki-Wa-Y, a residential summer camp.

Mike Stork and John Haddock both remarked on the extraordinary gift they were receiving from the Kiwanis Club.  A commemorative plaque will be placed at the camp.

Malcolm Shantz presented the Club’s original Banner to Mike Stork.  The banner will be hung in the dining hall at the camp.

The camp was originally operated on leased land at Paradise Lake in partnership with the YMCA. In 1938, the club purchased 23.9 acres of lakefront property for $2868 (a large commitment in those days).  The vision continued when a second parcel of land was purchased in 1946, and a third in 1949.  In 1960 the present entrance and right of way of 10 acres and a house was acquired. Until recently, the club members were involved in many “hands on” projects such as building of cabins and the refurbishment of the stairway to the lakefront dock.

Kiwanis has been very proud of its relationship with the YMCA over the years and hopes to continue the relationship informally in the future.
